Las Cruces Today
Las Cruces is located in the South of New Mexico, in the beautiful Mesilla Valley along the Rio Grande with the majestic Organ Mountains as back drop. Las Cruces has been ranked 'Top Destination' by Facilities and Destinations Magazine in 2001, 2002 and 2004, and 'Best Small Metro Area for Business and Careers' by Forbes in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Las Cruces offers for the outdoor enthusiasts ample opportunities to hike, mountain bike and golf. Las Cruces boasts an avid and enthusiastic Four Wheel Drive club. Many 4 wheel drive trails are in the area. Las Cruces is only 2 hours drive from Ruidoso, the mountain paradise get-a-way. Leding Cactus Garden is a desert botanical garden specializing in cactus. It is located on the campus of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. The Organ Mountains are a rugged mountain range on the east side of Las Cruces in Doña Ana County.
The Organ Mountains are near the southern end of a long line of mountains on the east side of the Rio Grande's rift valley. The Organ Mountains are volcanic in origin. Their name reflects their similarity in appearance with pipes that would be part of a pipe organ. The pipes (also referred to as needles) are the remnants of volcanic vents that have been exposed as a result of weathering.
The San Andres Mountains are separated from the Organ Mountains by the San Andres Pass, through which U.S. Route 70 passes on its way to White Sands Missile Range, White Sands National Monument and Alamogordo. The Franklin Mountains are separated from the Organ Mountains by a 10-mile wide gap, most of which is part of Fort Bliss.
Las Cruces is home to several museums. The Las Cruces Museum of Fine Art features exhibitions of contemporary art from such great artists as Luis Jiminez, Esther Parada and Graham Nash.
The Down Town Mall at historic Main Street has a farmers market each weekend where many different foods and cultural items are sold by local farmers and artists. Down Town is home to different businesses, churches and theaters, which add to the character of this historic part of Las Curces.
